About the Directory
FreePreschool.us is an independent, privately operated directory. It is not operated by the U.S. government, the Office of Head Start, any state education agency or any school district, and it has no partnership with or endorsement from any of them.
What the directory is
The directory lists preschool programs that families may be able to attend free of charge or at reduced cost, organised by state and county. The present database is primarily historical information about Head Start and Early Head Start centers compiled from public sources, together with a small number of programs added by their operators. Most records were last materially updated in 2017 and 2018. See Data Sources for the provenance and its limits.
What the directory is not
- It does not enroll children, take applications or hold waiting lists.
- It does not decide who qualifies. Each program and its local agency set eligibility, availability and enrollment rules.
- A listing does not mean a program is currently open, currently accepting applications, or free for every family.
Always confirm current hours, eligibility and enrollment directly with the program or its local agency before relying on a listing. For current Head Start and Early Head Start discovery, HeadStartPrograms.org maintains a separately updated directory.
How listings are handled
Listings move through a simple review process described on How We Review Listings. Anyone can report an error or suggest an update; see the Corrections Policy.
Advertising
The site is funded by advertising. Advertising never affects which programs are listed, how they are ordered, whether a submission is approved, or what a listing says. Details are in the Advertising Disclosure.

Use the contact form for questions about the directory itself. The site cannot answer questions about a specific program's enrollment; contact the program directly.
